Now J. Marie Darden delivers the eagerly
awaited sequel-
a
coming of age novel about finding peace by finding yourself…
If life imitates art, then 2006 is the year to change the way we look at each other. With Hollywood validating interracial relationships with films like Something New, it is clear that America is ready to change the way it thinks about relationships. Yet, movies like Crash indicate that our prejudices may be more insidious than ever. In Finding Dignity, the central characters are forced to take a new look at their relationships by taking a close look at themselves. America has begun to “find its own Dignity” by undergoing a similar process in books, politics, and film.
But change is never easy…
In Finding Dignity (Strebor Books; February 21, 2006; $15.00; 1-59309-051-X ), Dignity Jackson is having an identity crisis. She is a child of interracial parents, and the ambiguity of her ancestry is confusing her more than ever. Since her mother has abandoned Dignity at age three, and since her father died before she was born, Dignity was raised by her strict Aunt Lette and Uncle Sam in Lexington, KY. And though she has been raised with love, she still feels out of place.
At age eighteen, Dignity accepts a scholarship to Morgan State University in Baltimore, Maryland. When she gets there, she discovers craziness is built into the curriculum. At this Historically Black University, she still doesn’t seem to fit in. Dignity’s neurotic quirks make it difficult for her to bond with Sal, her Italian boyfriend, especially since his parents are against their interracial relationship. And her good friends, Stacy and Khalil, have a relationship that is filled with drama, too. In the summer of her junior year, a pilgrimage through the South helps Dignity uncover many truths. It is there, on her road to self-discovery and acceptance, that Dignity realizes the past might be the key to her future.
